PhD position in high-temperature cooling systems

Information about the division
The research focus of Division of Building Services Engineering is on system solutions for ventilation, heating, cooling, lighting, and control technology. Our goal is to develop solutions that provide a healthy indoor environment while minimizing the impact on the outdoor environment.

This PhD project focuses on development of optimal design and control strategies for high-temperature cooling of office buildings with various terminal units and direct ground cooling. The research will involve modelling, simulation and experimental work. The project will run in cooperation with several local and international industrial and academic partners.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student your major responsibility is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research in major journals and conferences. You will collaborate with our industrial and academic partners and will conduct state-of-the-art modelling and experimental work.

You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks. You are expected to write a licentiate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The successful applicant will spend approximately 80% of their time on research and maximum 20% on teaching and other departmental tasks. The employment is tied to successful progress of doctoral studies, evaluated at one and three years, and is intended to start as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will focus on following research tasks:

• Establish prerequisites of HVAC systems and terminal units for utilizing high-temperature cooling.
• Determine the influence of terminal unit design on control strategies for direct ground cooling.
• Examine the impact of different control strategies on the function and performance of the overall system.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The PhD position is limited to a maximum of five years and offers a competitive monthly salary and full social benefits.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree in Building Services, HVAC, Control Systems Thermal or Mechanical Engineering or in a related discipline. Hands on experience with heating, cooling and/or control systems is meritorious. Programming skills in Matlab, VB, C/C++, or other programming languages are also advantageous.

Excellent English communication skills are needed for research and publication purposes. The ability to communicate in Swedish is also of value for this project but is not a prerequisite. The project will run in cooperation with several partners outside the division, hence the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills.

The applicant should have the ambition to take on responsibility and ability to work independently towards set goals. Previous experiences in research, publications, and teaching is valuable.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
